One of the more popular features of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge – at least among us tech geeks – is the inclusion of Qi Wireless charging. Sure older Galaxy smartphones had it, but you had to buy the Qi Wireless charging back to actually use it. Which was usually another $60 or so, unless you could find it on sale. Since the back of the Galaxy S6 is not removable, Samsung has decided to bake in Qi and PMA wireless charging. Which is a great thing, and it’s probably what will make wireless charging mainstream. Similar to Apple doing Apple Pay and making mobile payments mainstream.
Pretty much the entire time I’ve had the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, I’ve been using Wireless charging. I have a number of Qi Wireless charging pads around the house and have been using those to charge up the Galaxy S6. A number of them I still need to review, those will be coming up soon as well! One of the downsides to Qi Wireless charging on the Galaxy S6 is the glass back. If you owned a Nexus 4, Xperia Z1, Z2, or Z3, then you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. The glass back makes the Galaxy S6 slide off of the charger all the time. Sometimes I’ll hear it continually beeping as it starts charging then stops, starts then stops. And so on. But there’s an easy fix to that, just put on a case. I have a number of cases for both devices, and after putting on a case, no more issues with the device sliding off of the charger. Pretty simple.
There’s another downside to Qi Wireless Charging, although it’s not exclusive to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, and that’s how slow it is. If you’re like me and have been using Quick Charge on all your devices for the past few months, Qi Wireless charging might seem like it’s dead slow. It does charge a bit slower, unfortunately, so if you’re in a hurry you’ll probably want to use the Quick Charge cable for your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge.
Having said that, having Qi Wireless charging is pretty amazing. It means I can just set the device down on the charging pad on my desk and it starts charging. No more having to find a micro USB cable to charge it. And it’s great that all we have to buy now is a Qi Wireless charging pad for it to work.
