With the first flurry of mobile messaging wars having been won and lost, next generation messaging and chat apps are being seen by many as the new frontier to control the hearts and minds and pull at the purse-strings of the consumer. It is not much of a surprise then, that internet giants like Google, Facebook and Yahoo are all reportedly investing time, money and energy to come up with killer messaging apps that will have them competing against each other in this high stakes game.
Facebook has been betting big on messaging for a while now and they launched the Facebook Messenger platform for desktops during its F8 developer conference last month. Word is, that they want to turn Messenger into a full-fledged ecosystem with developer support. Last year, they also paid $19 billion to acquire WhatsApp, a popular mobile messaging application that competes in the market with Viber, WeChat, Telegram, Line, Hike and a whole host of other apps jostling for attention. Also last year, Facebook dropped the messaging features from their mobile app and started forcing its users to download the standalone Facebook Messenger app in order to continue messaging each other on their mobile devices.
It has also been reported earlier, that Facebook has been working on its own Android phone-dialer app, although we are yet to get any specific leads about that as of now. The software has reportedly been spotted in the wild as it is being tested on the social network now and could well be in the pipelines for a launch sooner rather than later. Now, a new report claims that Google is allegedly developing a new phone-dialer app quite apart from the one that comes with your standard issue Nexus devices. This one will attempt to integrate Google expertise in search with basic dialing and messaging features that lets users search for people and businesses. If their gambit pays off, it could, in the future, potentially play a significant role in combining the worlds of search and mobile messaging. Google’s search competitor Yahoo is also reportedly working on new apps that will “meld both live and recorded messages and videos” rather than just work the way current messaging apps do.
