Google Prepares To Bump Mobile Friendly Websites To The Top Of Search Rankings

AH Google Search-1

Google is taking a more heavy handed approach to mobile these days, which is evident by the changes they’re about to make to the browsing experience with Google Search. According to Google’s recent findings, more than 60% of all search activity is being accessed from mobile devices as opposed to the desktop versions of Search. This statistic has prompted Google to make a move into prioritizing websites that have mobile friendly versions in the search rankings. What this means is that when doing a search for anything on Google, the search rankings will have websites that have a mobile version show up in the results before those that don’t.

According to a report by Fortune which highlights these changes, Google is all set to put things into place starting tomorrow. It’s a move that sees Google considering more and more who their userbase is and where they’re browsing from, and mobile search is only likely to grow a little more before it plateaus. As more and more people begin to use smartphones, Google wants to be ready to serve them up a better experience when browsing from mobile devices. The prioritization of mobile friendly sites at the head of the search rankings follows up on Google’s decision to highlight which sites in the search rankings were mobile friendly, and now users won’t have to scroll through the results guessing which sites have a mobile optimized version or not. Everything will be at the top.

While this obviously means that users will likely be met with a better browsing experience on-the-go, reading between the lines reveals that what it means for websites, is that if there isn’t a mobile friendly version of their page already available, it might be time to get one up and running if they want the chance to be towards the top of the rankings. Without a mobile friendly version, websites risk being swallowed up by the possible masses of other relevant websites in which a mobile interface is accessible to users when they search for stuff. It means more work for website owners, but it also means more optimized searching for users.
