Meerkat launched a little while ago on iOS only. No surprise right? Most apps still launch on iOS first instead of Android, even though Android is much, much larger. Anyways, shortly after Meerkat launched – which is an app where you can live stream for a few minutes – Twitter launched their own version. Called Periscope. Again for iOS only. While many thought that Meerkat might have just died a slow death, Meerkat had other plans. They created all the buzz for a video live streaming app, and are looking to launch on Android soon.
Today, Meerkat launched a sign up sheet for their public beta on Android. The beta isn’t actually available yet, but you can sign up for it. It’s still a bit strange to me that they used a Google doc for people to sign up instead of just using Google Play’s built in beta program. Where they could make a Google+ Community or Google Group for users to join and then opt into the beta. Perhaps that will come later on. There’s no word on whether Meerkat will limit the number of users in their beta group or not. It normally happens in testing periods, so it’s quite possible that Meerkat keeps their public beta to a few thousand people at first.
So far we have no idea when the beta will actually be available on Android. But it shouldn’t be too much longer. On another, unrelated note, Meerkat’s competitor Periscope did also state that they will be making the jump to Android soon. We just don’t know when that will happen, yet.
If you’re interested in getting beta access to Meerkat, check out the Google Form which is in the source links below. It asks for just a little bit of info. Including your name, Twitter handle and email address. It’s a quick form, and takes about 2 minutes or less to fill out. We’ll be sure to update this post once the beta is available for people to try out. Meerkat has gotten rave reviews from iOS users, I would expect the same from Android users as well.
