Last month, Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge at an event in Barcelona at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) amidst a great deal of hype and fanfare. Both the devices came with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop pre-installed even though the 5.1 update had already been released by Google. While for most people, any version of Lollipop is a welcome update from Android 4.4 KitKat or dare I say Jelly Bean, you’d expect flagships to come straight out of the factory with the latest version of Android. While that unfortunately doesn’t always happen, there are reports in the media already, about the two aforementioned devices being the first in line to get the Android 5.1 treatment from Samsung. There have already been earlier reports about Lollipop updates for the Galaxy A series being in the pipelines, and now, there are reports regarding a whole bunch of other devices that may be getting the Lollipop treatment sooner than later.
According to a report, Samsung is currently working on updating at least three of their devices to Android 5.1; namely, the Galaxy S6, the S6 Edge and the Galaxy Grand Prime. Android Lollipop – albeit of a slightly older flavor – is also apparently in the works for two other handsets, a mid-range phablet called the Galaxy Mega 2 and an entry-level device called the Galaxy Core Prime, both of which came with factory installed KitKat. Now that just about all of Samsung’s flagship devices from the last couple of years are running at least some flavor of Lollipop or another, Samsung is probably concentrating on their mid-tier devices if these reports are anything to go by. There is however, no concrete time-frame for these reported updates to go live.
Amidst all this positive news however, there might be one sore point especially for the owners of Samsung’s second generation phablet flagship, the Galaxy Note 2. The device is currently stuck on KitKat and there is apparently no Lollipop build currently under development for it. There’s been a lot of speculation online amongst owners of the device as to whether it will get the official OEM version of Android Lollipop, and most reports have indicated that it will indeed, alongside the Mega 2. But for now, there is no word as to when that will happen – if at all.
