Sprint MVNO Boost Mobile has announced today that it will be launching new prepaid services aimed at communication between individuals here in the U.S. and those they wish to speak with in Cuba. The new services are an attempt to provide more affordable low-cost rates to call Cuba, with a per minute rate set at what Boost is referring to as the lowest introductory rate for placing calls to the island nation. The rate is about $0.30 per minute and is available via a new $50 monthly service plan that Boost Mobile is now offering to consumers, and like all of Boost’s plans it will be non-contract so users will have the freedom to maneuver their plan should they ever have the need to do so.
Since the service is aimed at communication for individuals between the U.S. and Cuba, Boost Mobile will be rolling it out in Miami as a starting point where a majority of Cuban-American citizens reside, but will eventually launching it in other regions as well. The plan also includes unlimited texting, so for those who will be trying to reach relatives or anyone else within the country that owns a cell phone, (of which there are reported to be about 2 million out of Cuba’s 11 million population) the messaging provides another form of communication that can help to bypass the per minute charge for voice calls, if the situation calls for it of course, as sometimes a phone call is either more appropriate or simply needed.
The new services are a result of the new Cuban policy regulations put in place by the Obama administration, and according to Boost’s President Dow Draper, the service is a “great value” that will allow the U.S. as a whole to reduce the costs to communicate with the country while also allowing Boost to pick up new customers. Besides starting a process for offering low-cost rates on per minute calls to Cuba, Boost is also reported to be donating a sum of $10,000 to Roots of Hope, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the youth of Cuba with tools to build themselves a better future.
