MediaTek’s Helio X20 10-Core Flagship SoC Will Reportedly Ship With Devices Later This Year

Some of us old enough to remember the Intel versus AMD battle for x86 processor supremacy early last decade will have a sense of déjà vu ‘all over again’ going by the current MediaTek versus Qualcomm dogfight in the ARM mobile processor space. Same high stakes game, only different players this time around. Qualcomm has ruled the roost for a while now in the battle for mobile chipset supremacy, but over the last year or two, there has been mounting pressure on them from all quarters. Intel’s getting serious about their mobile Atom chipsets by addressing power efficacy concerns, Samsung’s decided to go with their own Exynos chips in high end devices and MediaTek’s been upping the ante for a while now with their multi-core processors with a high price to performance ratio.

Earlier this year, there were reports on how MediaTek had rebranded its MT679X range to the Helio X series, with ‘X’ ostensibly standing for extreme performance. The top of the line SoC (System on Chip) from that series, the Helio X20, is slated to be the new flagship for MediaTek, and will feature 10-cores, instead of the 8 seen in most current flagship processors including MediaTek’s own MT6795 and from Qualcomm (Snapdragon 810), Samsung (Exynos 5433) and Nvidia (Tegra X1). Just a few days back, there were reports about how about the upcoming Helio X20 chipset will in all likelihood go into mass production this year itself – as early as July if the reports are to be believed.

Now, a new report emanating out of Taiwan sheds some more light on the much rumored chipset. It says that the new chipset will feature two Cortex A57 cores and 4 + 4 Cortex A53 cores that’s not unlike ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture. The A57 cores will boost raw performance, but the A53 ones will be more power-efficient. The chip is reportedly powerful enough to break 70,000 on AnTuTu, although you have to take synthetic benchmarks with more than just a pinch of salt for more reasons than one. The Helio X20 will reportedly be built on TSMC’s (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) 20nm process and will come with a Cat. 6 4G LTE-A radio. Not much else is known about this latest chip from MediaTek at the moment, but at the rate these leaks are surfacing, it’s unlikely to stay that way soon.
