When you think about search engines, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Google, right? At least it should be, Google currently holds more than two thirds of the market share, at 64.4%, according to the latest comScore report. Microsoft’s Bing is now sitting at 20.1% which is a 0.3% increase over February. Google dropped just 0.1% from February. The rest make up a little less than 20%, which includes Yahoo at 12.7%, Ask at 1.8% and AOL at 1.1%. Ask and AOL actually stayed the same from February to March.
comScore also calculated the raw search numbers:
“18.9 billion explicit core searches were conducted in March, with Google Sites ranking first with 12.1 billion (up 11 percent). Microsoft Sites ranked second with 3.8 billion searches (up 12 percent), followed by Yahoo Sites with 2.4 billion (up 10 percent), Ask Network with 332 million (up 10 percent) and AOL, Inc. with 203 million (up 10 percent).”
So Google is still number one for search, but it appears that Microsoft is looking to grab some of that marketshare. Microsoft has been growing slowly but surely over the past few years, after they named their Search engine Bing. As most of you know, Google’s biggest source of income is from search and ads. It’s actually over 90% of their revenue. While Google does offer so many products and services, most of them are free, and is just a gateway to get users into their ecosystem and seeing their ads, which drives in more revenue. For example Gmail. It’s free, but you do see ads in Gmail. While subtle, they are still there.
Should Google be worried by Microsoft? Not yet. Google only went down 0.1% from February to March. Not a huge deal. But if it continues, they may start to worry. Microsoft and Google aren’t exactly friends. Microsoft still has a long road ahead of it to surpass Google though. Who has pretty much always been the search king. It’s interesting to see that AOL and Ask are still around though. comScore should have included China’s search engines in this report, I’m sure they have a pretty big market share, considering China is the biggest country in the world, and Google is banned over there.
