Tesco Puts A Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge In Space And Are Releasing It This Weekend

Tesco S6 Edge Of Space

Tesco is a British supermarket chain with fingers in many pies, including running a MVNO, Mobile Virtual Network Operator (a carrier that resells on anothers’ service to customers) based on O2’s network. We’ve seen Tesco broadening their appeal and today’s story concerns the carrier releasing the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge… from a balloon that’s at the edge of space. The smartphone is tied to a special balloon, launched from within the British Peak District National Park and is being monitored by three GoPro cameras. It’s currently up there in the sky. As a celebration, Tesco are planning on bursting the balloon and releasing the S6 Edge from, well, 32.5 km up, the edge of space. They’ll be running a competition and the follower who tweets “DROP” and the hashtag #S6EdgeOfSpace at the precise moment the balloon drops will, going on Tesco’s wording, “win the phone.” Presumably it’s going to be a different device than the exact model that’s being dropped… At the other end of the journey, there’s another competition whereby followers need to Tweet “LAND” together with “S6EdgeOfSpace” and another Galaxy S6 is the price for getting the timing spot on.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is the latest Samsung flagship device, designed by Samsung to be without compromise using the best components it could. To this end, it’s based around the new Samsung Exynos 7420 processor, which is built on a 14nm die size. This means that the chipset is exceptionally small, which reduces power consumption and improves performance. There’s a new high performance, low power memory unit with a choice of 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB storage, a 5.1-inch, QHD resolution (that’s 2,560 by 1,440 pixels) AMOLED display, 3 GB of RAM and a 16MP rear camera. There’s a sealed 2,600 mAh rechargeable battery, which is a first for a Samsung Galaxy flagship device. Another first is the lack of a MicroSD memory card slot; these could be deal breakers for some customers, but the S6 and S6 Edge are sure to be high sellers.

This isn’t the first destructive publicity stunt as we’ve seen OnePlus asking smartphone owners to deliberately destroy their device in the hope of receiving the new device. And like previous destructive publicity stunts, Tesco have already received some negative attention because of the competition, especially considering the stories that the S6 Edge is already in short supply.
